Area rugs are a great addition for any home! They are often used with hard surface flooring such as hardwood, vinyl, laminate or tile. Area rugs serve many purposes, both functional and aesthetic. If you are looking for area rugs for your Minneapolis home, read on to find the best rug for your needs.

Reasons for area rugs

Area rugs can do the following for your home:

  • Protect your hard surface flooring from furniture and foot traffic
  • Add warmth and a soft surface underfoot
  • Can break up a room into different sections
  • Add a pop of color or style

Choosing an area rug

First, determine where you want the area rug and decide what size you need. You can follow our chart below for some different options. Next, you can choose the style and color of your area rug. At Hopkins Carpet One, you can purchase a pre-made area rug from one of our manufacturers, or you can choose to have a custom rug made to your exact specifications using any carpet you choose!

You also have options in how you want the rug trimmed. Binding and serging are the two main options. Binding refers to a fabric band that is sewn to the edge of the rug. Serging involves a yarn loop stitch that wraps around the edge of the rug. Both options work great to protect the edges of the area rug. It’s simply a matter of preference for the look you prefer.

Placement of area rugs

The proper placement of area rugs can often be argued. Some say there are rules to follow, but you are also free to break those rules and do what you want! It’s important to consider the layout of the room and how your rug will work together with your furniture. Of course, the layout will vary widely, but our infographic below offers some basic guidelines (if you want to be a rule follower). Just remember to measure the space and decide on the placement before ordering your rug.
